This company was founded by two very different people — a successful real estate
industry entrepreneur and a man who has spent 35 years in the non-profit community.
Lewis Randa and I began with a purely philanthropic idea — how to turn the real
estate transaction into an opportunity for charitable giving.
But we quickly learned that HomeGift must also be grounded in the practical realities
that face every buyer and seller — how can I get the best price? How can I get the
best agent?
So that is what we are about – practical philanthropy. We impartially help consumers
select the right agent, which often translates into getting the best price. We arrange
for home buyers and sellers to get something back when they choose a real estate
agent through one of our programs — a rebate on real estate commissions. And then
we encourage participants to share some or all of that rebate with their favorite
charity.
A lot of things had to happen to make this possible.
First, real estate agents across the country had to embrace our idea. They did so
for practical reasons: They know that by joining our network they can get more business
by reaching millions of non-profit supporters. But agents have also joined for other
reasons — they have seen how giving back makes a difference.
Second, our early adopters — non-profit organizations like the Greyhound Friends,
the Carmelites and WGBH-Boston — had to believe in us. Laws had to change, too —
rebates on real estate commissions are now allowed in 40 states. And an industry
had to change — some 75 percent of people buying or selling a home now use the internet
at some point during the transaction.
Please take a few moments to learn how our company is saving consumers money and
making a difference.
